NEW YORK: United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has appreciated Pakistan’s leading role and strong support for the UN and its peace and development agenda.
He was speaking to Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, who paid a farewell call on him in New York.
The UN chief particularly praised Pakistan’s mediation efforts and its contribution as a current member of the Security Council.
Mr Guterres also congratulated Ambassador Asim on his appointment as Pakistan’s foreign secretary and wished him well.
In his remarks, Ambassador Asim thanked the secretary general for the support extended by him and his team during his tenure. He also commended Mr Guterres for his leadership and principled advocacy for multilateralism, the UN Charter and international law.
Amb. Asim Iftkhar completed his tenure as Pakistan’s Permanent Representative and has been appointed Pakistan’s next Foreign Secretary, succeeding Ms. Amna Baloch.
