Major cities on high alert amid escalating Pakistan-Afghan border tensions

TDV: Security was placed on high alert across Punjab and Karachi on Friday following Pakistan’s launch of “Ghazab Lil Haq”, an operation initiated in response to what officials described as unprovoked firing by Afghan Taliban forces at multiple points along the border in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

Punjab Inspector General Rao Abdul Kareem ordered stringent security arrangements across the province, particularly in view of Friday prayers, amid the tense situation on the western frontier.

According to official directives, Punjab Police has been put on high alert, with enhanced vigilance along internal borders and increased monitoring of sensitive locations. The IG directed officers to maintain strict surveillance of suspected militants, miscreants and other suspicious individuals.

He said the police force stood “shoulder to shoulder” with the armed forces and security agencies in safeguarding the country’s security.

Security was further tightened at mosques, police check posts, foreign missions and other sensitive installations. Authorities were also instructed to continue search and combing operations to pre-empt potential threats.

In Karachi, DIG East Farukh directed all officers and personnel to remain vigilant and ensure heightened security across sensitive sites and key buildings. Snap-checking and temporary blockades were established on major roads to monitor suspicious movement.

“We are fully prepared to deal with any internal unrest,” the DIG said, adding that protecting the country remained the foremost priority of the police.

In Balochistan’s Chaman district, the District Health Officer declared an emergency in all hospitals and issued a formal notification in this regard. Doctors, nurses and paramedical staff were directed to remain on alert, while hospitals were instructed to ensure adequate stocks of medicines and blood supplies.

Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar claimed that 133 members of the Afghan Taliban regime had been killed and more than 200 injured in what he termed Pakistan’s retaliatory action.
