Islamabad: The Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, speaking to a session entitled: A New Helsinki, at WEF, said that a New World Order was needed with the role of the Global South.

Welcoming the Foreign Minister’s statement, the Executive Director COMSATS said that the Global South, which constitutes over 80% of the world population with immense human and largely unexploited natural resources, should be seen as a major stakeholder in the world affairs.

The Commission on Science & Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) was envisioned by the world-renowned Pakistani Scientist, Theoretical Physicist and Nobel Laureate, Prof. Dr. Abdus Salam, in 1994. Recognizing the potential that the developing world collectively held then and for the future, his brainchild brought a number of countries together to establish this intergovernmental international platform. COMSATS currently has 27 member states and a Network of International S&T Centres of Excellence, nominated by the member states. The Network at present has 24 nodes from around the world.

COMSATS’ objectives and Foreign Minister Bilawal’s assertion about the significance of the Developing countries match and hence offer an opportunity to work together to find its due place at the global level. The natural resources, the human capital and potential of growth make the Global South engine of scientific development & innovations, economic growth and sustainability for the entire world. COMSATS is keen and forthcoming to work closely with the Government of Pakistan, which is COMSATS’ active founding member and hosts its permanent Secretariat in Islamabad, and also with all its members’ respective governments and non-member developing countries to attain the common objectives.
